Even though we are still banging in goals this season thanks to Bowen and Kudus it’s no secret that we’ve needed a quality striker for some time.

We’ve swung and missed on several signings over recent years, how far back do we have to go before we can say he was a quality striker for us?

Was Sakho that guy? Bemba Ba’s career at West Ham was too short to be considered but he could play.

So how far back do we have to go before we say we had ourselves a proper striker?

"Pop" Robson - which shows how long it's been since I followed the team in the style of a "real" fan.

most recent first:

Carroll - solid if not spectacular
Sakho - had that one great season then ???
Ashton - we'll never know, too bad
Hartson - probably the one that sticks in the mind for that 97-98 season tally

He makes Kieran Dyer look healthy. It doesn't matter how good you are if you never play.

I rated Carroll, was an absolute workhorse too, just a shame with all the injuries, etc.

Harrison & Kitson we’re brilliant early on. So was Sakho & Valencia but none were ever as good as Dean Ashton. His injury was a real tragedy…

I liked Arnautovic but he never quite lost the Stoke taint for me and never seemed to belong to us. I hope Tim Steidten knows his strikers because I’m damn sure Moyes is clueless in that area…

Quite frightening when you read the above "55 forwards signed in West Ham’s Gold & Sullivan era"

I thought Sakho and Valencia had a bit of a good run in a diamond under BFS but it didn't last long. Ashton as others have said was a tragic end to an extremely promising career. Zamora was ok as was Morley back in the 90's but yep the last really consistent one season after season was probably Cottee.

I remember Hartson scoring a header where he the centre half keeper and the ball all ended up in the back of the net.
A proper unit and good finisher but like Caroll lacked the necessary self discipline and professionalism to be elite.

Astounding with John how his testicular cancer went undiagnosed for so long, although by his own admission he ignored the lumps for so long he also underwent various thorough club medicals during that time.

Thought Hartson and Kitson were a decent partnership.

Sakho was good albeit short lived,

Javier Hernandez was more effective with 16 goals in 31 games but never got regular chances

Andy Carroll had a fair goals to game ration but sadly spent more time injured than playing.

Dean Ashton similar to Hernandez in goals to games and another with a career ending injury.

Tony Cottee seems to be the last true striker and he finished nearly 30 years ago. 146 goals in 323 appearances.

"MAY - Misses last four games of West Ham's season through suspension. Still ends with career-best 24 goals - the second-highest in the Premiership."

According to this:-
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/torschuetzenliste/wettbewerb/GB1/saison_id/1997

The highest goal scorer in the 1997/98 Premier League only got 18. Hartson was 7th, with 15 league goals,

We've never had a player score 20 Premier League goals, in a season. PDC the highest with 16, then Hartson, with 15.

The injury to Ashton was tragic as he had all the attributes to be one of the Very best best both at club and international level.
He reminded me of Sheringham in a way and seemed to possess that same footballing nous that very few have.

We have had a fair few mavericks in Di Canio Wanchope Arnie and I also rated Kanoute

Partnership's that obviously stick In the mind are Cottee and Frankie Mac and to a lesser degree Hartson and Kitson.

Sheringham Wright Allen and Ferdinand all great strikers but well past there best by the time they joined us.

if it can only be players you watched on a regular basis, it would have to be hartson. on his day and with his head right he was unplayable, but stimac exposed a weakness with him and his short fuse. loved watching him though
